Writing good prompts
Practical tips for prompts that give you a better app on the first try, and for edits that land exactly where you want them.
A good prompt says who uses the app, what data it keeps, which screens it needs and who is allowed to do what. You do not need technical words. The more concrete you are about your idea, the closer the first version will be.
What to include in the first prompt
Cover four things, in any order:
- Users. Who opens this app? A receptionist, a customer, a manager?
- Data. What does the app keep track of? Patients, orders, invoices, equipment?
- Screens. What should people see? A dashboard, a list with filters, a detail page, a form?
- Roles. Who can see or change what? For example, managers see everything, staff see only their own records.
Here is a prompt that covers all four:
An equipment rental app for a small film studio. Staff can book gear and see their own bookings. Managers see all bookings, a calendar and a list of gear with its status.
You do not have to be perfect. If something is missing, Kuika AI makes a sensible choice, and you can change it afterwards in chat.
Keep edits small
Once the app exists, ask for one change per message. Kuika AI then changes only the part that matters, and you can see exactly what happened.
- Good: "Add a status filter to the bookings list."
- Harder to follow: "Add a filter, change all colors, add a new report page and rename the menu."
If you have several changes, send them one after another. Kuika AI also lets you keep typing while it works.
Show, do not only tell
Attach what you already have. Kuika AI can read screenshots, PDFs, Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, so you can hand over a specification, a spreadsheet of sample data or a design to copy. Use the paperclip button, drag a file into the chat, or paste a screenshot. You can also capture the current preview from the + menu and mark what you mean. See Chat editing for the details.
Let Kuika AI improve your prompt
If your idea is still rough, write it down anyway and open the + menu in the prompt box. Choose Enhance prompt. Kuika AI rewrites your text into a fuller prompt. You can keep the result or discard it, and your original text is never lost. If you would rather see a plan first, use Plan mode.
Teach Kuika AI your standing rules
Rules that should hold for every change, such as the language of the screens or the currency, do not belong in each prompt. Write them once in the app's knowledge. See Project knowledge.
Examples
A short prompt for a first app:
A simple customer support portal where customers open tickets and agents reply and close them
A mobile app prompt:
A habit tracker where I add daily habits, check them off and see a weekly streak
An edit prompt:
On the tickets page, show the newest tickets first and add a colored badge for each status
Things to avoid
- Do not paste passwords or API keys into a prompt. Kuika AI warns you and offers to store them safely instead.
- Do not ask for ten unrelated things at once.
- Do not worry about wording. Plain sentences work best.
